French Toast: what is it?

Bread pieces are dipped into a combination of beaten eggs and milk for French toast, which is a brunch meal fried until golden brown. French toast is a delightful and adaptable breakfast dish that is often served with toppings like powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or maple syrup.

Origin and Background

The origins of French toast can be traced to the Roman Empire, when bread known as "Pan Dulcis" was prepared by soaking it in a solution of egg and milk and then deep-frying it. This dish has been modified over ages by several nations, each incorporating their own special touch. It is thought that the term "French Toast" was first used by early American settlers.

Description

The middle of French toast is soft and custardy, with a crust that is golden brown. When fried, the outside crisps up wonderfully and the inside becomes rich and moist due to the bread's absorption of the egg mixture. French toast is a delicious dish for brunch or breakfast because of the contrast in textures.

French toast is one of those dishes that can be served for breakfast to people of different ages. It is prepared from the bread soaked in a marinade of eggs, milk, and spices and crisp fried in butter or oil. The usual accompaniment of French toast is maple syrup but it can also be eaten with fruits, whipped cream or powdered sugar.

Recipe Ingredients:

4 thick slices of bread of your choice: challah, brioche, French bread, and etc.

 2 eggs

 1/2 cup milk

 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon butter or oil (It is recommended to use butter to begin with)

 Maple syrup, for serving

 Instructions:

In another bowl, combine the eggs, the milk, the vanilla and cinnamon to make a shallow soup.
Coat both sides of each slice of bread with the eggl Dry each of the slices in the egg mixture.
Melt the butter or oil on a large non-stick skillet, cook to medium heat.
Fry the bread to a golden brown by flipping it over and toasting it for 2-3 minutes on the other side.

The French toast served hot has to be accompanied by maple syrup.

 Tips:

To make this dish even tastier, do not use any plain milk and instead, go for the heavy cream.
It is also advisable top add a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the egg mixture to give the dish extra flavour.
With regards to the garnishing, one can then serve the French toast with fruits, especially berries or bananas.

To put a little twist on this consider using cinnamon raisin bread or chocolate bread for your French toast.
